Some Tips on Buying the Small Boat Jon Boat Trailer For Sale
Buying a smaller jon boat trailer for sale boat is basically no different than buying a larger boat. However, two factors are apt to be more
critical.
The first is that the lower costs mean that the builder and the dealer have less money with which to dicker, rectify minor flaws, settle
warranty claims, etc.
The second is that small boat buyers (and sellers of used boats) are apt to be less experienced and less certain of what they are looking for (and
looking at) than those who are buying larger boats.
Both of these factors warrant some tips—some obvious, others more subtle—on buying a small boat either new or used. Be aware, though, that the
following are generalities.
• Shop around before buying. Find out what others are sailing —and happiest with —in the waters where you plan to do most of your sailing.
• Shop locally first. The local dealer has a reputation and business to protect; he is likely to be more sympathetic to your
desires than a dealer miles away.
• Be cautious. Small jon boat trailer for sale boats are seldom long-time purchases.
Resale value is important. Boats from little known builders (especially those some distance away), odd boats, high priced boats, character
boats, etc. may pose problems if and when you want to sell them or trade them in.
• Know the laws on trailering if there is any chance you will transport your boat any distance (or across state lines).
• Sail the boat before buying. A boat dealer may balk at giving you a trial sail, but there is nothing more worth while a buyer can do to avoid later
unhappiness.
Sail the boat in conditions typical of those in which you will normally sail.
• Check fittings and hardware before delivery.
Replace inadequate fittings and add the ones you think you will need. Not only may the dealer give you an allowance on the original equipment
but he may give you a break on installation costs.
• Buy an outboard motor from the shop that will service it.
The major motors are generally uniform in quality and price; the servicing of those motors is not uniform, dependent as it is on local shops.
Check these shops before buying.
• The average dealer commission on a smaller boat is 17% on the "base price." His markup on equipment he supplies and installs (not "factory installed") is about 40%
(less on electronics). There's the same markup on
trailers. His labor charges build in a 25% profit.
These are the percentages with which you and he can bargain.
• If you want to race, buy a racing boat; if to cruise, a cruising boat. Dual-purpose boats at the low end of the size and price scale may do
neither well.
• Don't expect too much with jon boat trailer for sale.
If you demand full headroom, you will get ungainly topside height and probably poor windward performance.
If you want too many berths, you'll get a cramped interior. If you want a boat that does not heel, you'll get a boat that does not sail.
